Gordhandas arrived in Leicester in March 1968, six months before Shantokben and the youngest children. He spent those six months in a single rented room and a job at a hosiery factory, sending money back and finding a house.
Quiet at the dinner table. Funny at the corner shop. He never wrote anything down, which is why the audio recordings of Shantokben matter so much; we only have his voice through other people's memories.
